ENGLISH LITERATURE WEEK
Monday 18 to Friday 22 February 2002

The program, aside from the usual exhibition by students of student projects displayed in the concourse and library, also showcased several nouveau activities in campus.

STATUES, BUSKERS & MIME Actors, wooed the lunchtime crowd with their fanciful costumes and impersonations, which were reminiscent of the street art scene in London's Covent Garden.

The highlight of the week however, was on 21st February when the students from the Drama Club and Literature classes put up 2 productions and 3 presentations during the JC1 and JC2 Civics Tutorial Period at 4 Lecture Theatres concurrently.

At LT5, the members of the Drama Club treated the students to two hilarious plays, "EAT, DRINK AND BE SCARY" AND "THE PRINCE'S DILEMMA" directed by Miss Lim Siew Yea and Mdm. Jacqueline Yew respectively. Facilitated by Ms G. Rosalind J., students in LT 2, 3 and 4 had the opportunity to view some of the Year 2s research projects on THEMES IN SINGAPORE LITERATURE. Themes included the tabooed subject of DEATH, the erosion of CULTURE & TRADITION and the use of HUMOR in the socio-political contexts of local literature.

Other activities included a sampling test as part of a presentation by 2A02 on Images of Food in local writing at the concourse. Participants who volunteered included Mr. Stephen Tay who blindfolded were required to identify food items by their smell and taste.

The week's activities came to an end with the English Quiz, organised and administered by JC1 students. Under the class category, 2S13 emerged as top winner and Nurhayati bte Abdul Rahman of 2A02 won in the individual category.

All proceeds amounting to $263.65 go to the College Jogathon Fund. The English class has plans to have more of these literary events in the future. So look out for the Drama Club's entry for the SYF and Shakespeare Day on 23 April 2002 in commemoration of the birth and death of the poet playwright.
